Saw Palmetto: A Natural Boost for Men

The History of Saw Palmetto as a Supplement

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) has a long history of medicinal use, dating back centuries. Native American tribes, including the Seminole and Miccosukee, traditionally used the berries of the Saw Palmetto plant for various purposes. These indigenous peoples believed in its therapeutic properties, using it to address issues related to the reproductive system, urinary tract, and overall vitality.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Saw Palmetto gained popularity among European and American herbalists for its potential benefits on male reproductive health. As time progressed, interest in Saw Palmetto as a supplement grew, leading to a surge in scientific research to explore its efficacy and mechanisms of action.

Men's Health Benefits of Saw Palmetto

Prostate Health

One of the primary reasons men turn to Saw Palmetto is its potential positive impact on prostate health. The prostate, a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder, tends to enlarge with age, leading to conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Many studies have suggested that Saw Palmetto may help alleviate symptoms associated with BPH, including urinary difficulties and frequent nighttime urination.

Urinary Tract Functions

Saw Palmetto supplementation not only highlighted improvements in urinary symptoms related to BPH but also supported the overall enhancement of urinary function. In 2020, a study in Asia has found that Saw Palmetto extract demonstrated significant improvements in urinary symptoms and flow rate in men with BPH. Another study in 2021 reported that Saw Palmetto extract exhibited anti-inflammatory effects, contributing to its potential benefit in prevention and treatment of prostate conditions.

Sexual dysfunction

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a major risk factor for sexual dysfunction. Suter A, Saller R, Riedi E, et al. in a 2013 study showed that elderly men treated with 320 mg of saw palmetto extract daily for eight weeks not only experienced a significant 52% improvement in their International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), but also had a significant 40% improvement in sexual dysfunction scores, which can significantly improve quality of life as a result.

Hair Loss Prevention

Saw Palmetto has also gained attention for its potential role in addressing hair loss, particularly male pattern baldness. The hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is linked to hair loss, and Saw Palmetto is believed to inhibit 5-alpha reductase enzyme which blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT. This action may help slow down hair loss and promote hair regrowth.

Testosterone Regulation

Testosterone is converted to DHT systemically as well as within the prostate by an enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase. Researches suggests that Saw Palmetto may play a role in positively regulating aging men's hormonal balance, possibly by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, involved in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) as well as regulating androgen.

Clinical Dosage of Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health

Studies on Saw Palmetto for prostate health commonly use doses ranging from 160 mg to 320 mg per day. It's important to note that individual responses may vary, and consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation regimen is advisable.
