Skin and Science: Studies Show Antioxidants can Increase Collagen by 57%

Our skin is the first touchpoint between our bodies and the outside world. As the barrier our skin therefore takes a lot of stress and insults from the environment. One of the most detrimental agents regarding the health of our skin is the sun. For instance, to name a few effects, overexposure to ultraviolet radiation can result in erythema, edema, photoaging, sunburn, hyperplasia and premature aging. UVA comprising of around 95% of the total UV radiation that comes from sunlight penetrates into deep into our skin and reaches our second layer of skin, known as the dermis.

Our skin naturally contains high amounts of vitamin C, the abundance of vitamin C in our skin supports important functions such as stimulating collagen synthesis, and assisting in antioxidant protection against UV induced photodamage. Antioxidants are also present in our skin and they help protect the skin’s surface from oxidative harm caused by free radicals as well as UV and pollution.

There is increasing evidence that shows that vitamin C as well as other antioxidants as a whole can positively benefit our skin and reserve some of the excess damage that has been caused by sun overexposure. In fact, multiple human studies have been done and have found promising results. For instance, in a 2015 study, 47 men aged 30-45 were given an oral supplement of common antioxidants including 54mg or 22mg of vitamin C and 27mg of grape seed extract. The study was to measure the subjective appearance of objective measure of collagen and elastin. After 180 days it was found that there was an overall improvement in erythma, hydration, radiance and overall appearance. Not to mention, collagen had increased by 43-57% while elastin had increased by 20%-31% for the subjects in the study. Another study, included a 90-day study where 60 healthy non-smoker males and females all aged between 40-65 years of age took an antioxidant oral supplement for 90 days. The study found a subjective assessment that there was an improved skin elasticity and moisture capacity.
