Approximately 99% of our body’s calcium is stored in our bones and teeth, with the remaining 1% to be found in our blood, muscles, and other tissues. Our bodies obtain the calcium it requires in two different ways. The first way our body gets calcium is through our diets, either through foods rich in calcium or with calcium supplements. If we are not getting enough calcium through our diets the second way our body will obtain calcium is by taking it from our bones. This is called losing boss mass, and overtime this makes our bones weak and porous whilst putting us at a high risk of contracting the disease osteoporosis. According to recent statistics obtained by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, 1 in 3 women over the age of 50 and 1 in 3 men experience osteoporotic fractures in their lifetime.
To prevent your body from losing bone mass it may be beneficial to add calcium supplements into your diet. One study conducted over 7 years and published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition demonstrated that using an algae calcium supplement improved the bone mineral density in women who took the supplement for over 7 years. Scientists had found that using this algae calcium supplement was associated with a 1.04% increase in bone mineral density per year, totaling a 7.3% increase over the whole 7-year study period.
There is increasing evidence showing that Algae Calcium serves as a better calcium supplement, than the more widely used calcium carbonate. A recent animal study published in 2017 in the Calcium Tissue International Journal sought to identify the extent that algae calcium may outperform calcium carbonate. The animal study consisted of a 20-week study using 88 female rats. This study involved giving one group of rats regular calcium carbonate, and another group Aquamin Algae Calcium, there was also a control group. Study showed that the rats’ bone structure after 20 weeks was maintained well in the group that was given Aquamin.
